Blood sugar perimenopause

Episode 97: Why Blood Sugar Matters (Even If You're Not Diabetic)

When you hear the words blood sugar, what comes to mind?

For many people, it’s diabetes.

But the truth is, blood sugar regulation is something that matters to every single one of us, whether we have diabetes or not.

It influences how we feel every day.

Our energy, our concentration, our mood, our cravings, our sleep, our hormones, our ability to build and preserve muscle.

And yes, even the way our body stores and uses energy.

In this week’s episode of Empowered Perimenopause, we’re continuing our Whole-Body Shift series by exploring one of the most important, but usually overlooked, systems involved in navigating perimenopause well.

As our hormonal landscape changes during midlife, the way our body regulates blood sugar can begin to change too. That doesn’t mean your body is failing you. It means it’s adapting.

Understanding these changes can help explain why you may suddenly experience afternoon energy crashes, stronger cravings, brain fog, feeling “hangry,” or why meals that once kept you satisfied no longer seem to.

Rather than fearing carbohydrates or striving for perfectly “flat” blood sugar levels, this episode explores how simple daily habits can support your body’s natural ability to regulate blood sugar more effectively.

As always, the goal isn’t perfection.

It’s understanding.

Because when we understand what’s happening inside our body, we’re much better equipped to work with it rather than against it.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What blood sugar actually is and why it matters to everyone, not just people with diabetes.
  • How your body regulates blood sugar throughout the day.
  • The role of insulin and what we mean by insulin sensitivity.
  • Why insulin sensitivity can change during perimenopause.
  • How blood sugar influences energy, mood, concentration and cravings.
  • Why preserving muscle supports healthier blood sugar regulation.
  • How balanced meals can help create steadier energy throughout the day.
  • The important roles of protein and fibre.
  • Why strength training and gentle movement after meals support blood sugar regulation.
  • How sleep and stress influence the way your body manages blood sugar.
  • Why supporting blood sugar is about nourishing your body, not restricting it.

Key Takeaways

One of the biggest misconceptions is that blood sugar only matters if you have diabetes.

In reality, blood sugar regulation influences almost every aspect of how we feel, from our energy and appetite to our hormones, sleep and long-term metabolic health.

The encouraging news is that supporting healthy blood sugar doesn’t require perfection or restrictive diets.

It comes back to the same simple foundations we’ve explored throughout this series:

  • Building balanced meals.
  • Eating enough protein.
  • Including plenty of fibre.
  • Preserving muscle through strength training.
  • Moving your body regularly.
  • Prioritising sleep.
  • Supporting your nervous system.

None of these habits work in isolation. They all work together to create an internal environment where your body can thrive.
