Do you feel like you’ve become a different person in your 40s?
Perhaps you’re exhausted despite getting enough sleep. You’re waking at 3am, feeling more anxious than ever before, forgetting words, struggling to cope with everyday stress, or noticing weight gain around your middle despite not changing much.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone.
One of the most common things women say to me in clinic is:
“I just don’t feel like myself anymore.”
The response they’re usually given is, “It’s just your hormones.”
Whilst hormones are absolutely changing during perimenopause, I believe that explanation only tells part of the story.
In this episode, I introduce the concept of The Whole-Body Shift, a way of understanding perimenopause that looks beyond declining oestrogen and progesterone to explore how this transition affects your entire physiology.
When we understand what’s really happening inside the body, we can stop feeling broken and start supporting ourselves in a way that truly works.
Why perimenopause is about more than hormones
Perimenopause is often described as a hormonal transition, and that’s true.
During this stage of life, progesterone gradually declines and oestrogen becomes increasingly unpredictable before eventually declining too.
But these hormonal changes don’t happen in isolation.
Oestrogen and progesterone interact with almost every major system in the body, which means the changes of perimenopause can influence:
- Your nervous system
- Your stress response
- Sleep quality
- Blood sugar regulation
- Metabolism
- Brain function and memory
- Exercise tolerance
- Muscle health
- Immune system
- Mood and emotional resilience
That’s why two women with similar hormone levels can have completely different experiences during perimenopause.
It’s also why focusing solely on replacing hormones doesn’t always address everything you’re experiencing.
Why you suddenly feel like you can’t cope anymore
One of the biggest themes we explore in this episode is resilience.
Many women tell me,
“I used to cope with everything. What’s happened to me?”
Rather than seeing this as a personal failing, I encourage you to think of perimenopause as a stage where your body’s ability to compensate for stress begins to change.
The same busy life you’ve been managing for years may suddenly feel much more demanding.
Not because you’re weaker.
But because your physiology has changed.
This shift can make you more sensitive to:
- Poor sleep
- Skipped meals
- Blood sugar fluctuations
- Chronic stress
- Alcohol
- Overtraining
- Nutrient deficiencies
- The mental load of everyday life
Understanding this can be incredibly reassuring because it reframes your symptoms as communication from your body—not evidence that it’s failing.
Understanding the Whole-Body Shift
I often describe perimenopause as a whole-body transition rather than simply a hormonal one.
As oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate, they influence the systems responsible for energy production, mood regulation, sleep, metabolism and stress resilience.
This helps explain why symptoms such as anxiety, brain fog, fatigue, poor sleep and weight gain can often appear together.
Rather than viewing each symptom in isolation, we can begin to understand how they’re connected.
Why a whole-body approach matters
One of the key messages from this episode is that supporting yourself through perimenopause isn’t about finding one magic supplement or one perfect solution.
It’s about creating an environment where your body feels supported.
That means looking beyond hormones alone and considering the foundations of health that influence every system in the body.
In the episode, I introduce my Four Foundational Pillars:
- Blood sugar balance
- Sleep
- Stress resilience
- Movement
These foundations don’t just support one symptom—they influence almost every aspect of your health, helping your body adapt more smoothly to the hormonal changes of perimenopause.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why perimenopause isn’t just about declining hormones
- What I mean by The Whole-Body Shift
- Why anxiety, fatigue and brain fog often occur together
- Why your body feels less resilient to stress than it once did
- How perimenopause affects your nervous system, metabolism and sleep
- Why symptoms can feel so overwhelming even if your hormone levels aren’t dramatically different
- Why supporting your whole body is just as important as supporting your hormones
- The four foundational areas I focus on with clients to help them navigate perimenopause with greater confidence
Key takeaways
One of the biggest mindset shifts I hope you’ll take away from this episode is this:
Perimenopause isn’t your body falling apart, it’s your body asking for a different kind of care.
Your body isn’t working against you.
It’s communicating with you.
When we stop fighting our physiology and begin working with it, we can support this transition with much more confidence, compassion and understanding.
