Episode 78: What a Perimenopause Health Assessment Really Looks Like (and How a Nutritional Therapist Can Help)

If you’ve ever felt like something isn’t quite right in your body… but you can’t fully explain it, this episode is for you.

So many women in their 40s are told their symptoms are “just hormones”, or are offered solutions like HRT without fully understanding what’s actually driving how they feel.

And while HRT can be incredibly supportive, it’s often not the full picture.

In this episode, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my one-to-one work as a nutritional therapist, and walking you through what a perimenopause health assessment really looks like.

Because this work goes far beyond “just diet”, it’s about understanding your body as a whole, identifying root causes, and creating a personalised plan that actually works for you.

What you’ll learn in this episode

  • Why perimenopause symptoms are rarely “just hormones”
  • The biggest gap in perimenopause support right now
  • What a nutritional therapist actually does (and how this differs from standard care)
  • How blood sugar, stress, gut health, thyroid and more all impact your hormones
  • What a root-cause, functional medicine approach really looks like
  • Why joining the dots is key to feeling better

What I look at in a perimenopause health assessment

When you work with me, we don’t just look at symptoms, we look at the whole picture.

This includes:

  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Stress and nervous system health
  • Gut health and digestion
  • Nutrient status
  • Thyroid function
  • Oestrogen metabolism
  • Immune health and inflammation

Because your hormones don’t operate in isolation, they respond to everything happening in your body.

What a perimenopause health assessment actually involves

If you’ve ever wondered what working with a nutritional therapist looks like in practice, here’s a behind-the-scenes overview:

1. Comprehensive health intake

You’ll complete a detailed health questionnaire covering your symptoms, medical history, cycle patterns, digestion, energy, lifestyle and more.

2. 60-minute in-depth consultation (Zoom)

We explore your symptoms, uncover patterns, and begin connecting the dots, often for the first time.

3. Identification of root drivers

I analyse your case in detail to identify what’s really driving your symptoms and where to focus first.

4. Personalised health roadmap

Within 3 working days, you’ll receive a tailored plan including:

  • Nutrition guidance
  • Lifestyle recommendations
  • Supplement support (where appropriate)
  • Functional testing recommendations (if needed)

5. Functional testing (optional)

Where clinically appropriate, we may explore testing such as:

  • Hormone and adrenal testing
  • Gut health analysis
  • Thyroid panels
  • Nutrient status
  • Organic acids and other advanced testing

These tests are optional and always discussed based on your needs and budget.

6. Ongoing support (if needed)

Some women choose to continue with 3-month support to implement and optimise their plan, while others use their roadmap as a strong starting point.

Why this approach is different

This isn’t about a quick fix or a one-size-fits-all plan.

It’s about:

  • Understanding your body
  • Addressing root causes
  • Creating stability (not just symptom relief)
  • Supporting your hormones indirectly by supporting everything they respond to

You might come to me with:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Poor sleep

But underneath that, we often uncover:

  • Blood sugar imbalances
  • Chronic stress
  • Gut health issues
  • Or other health imbalances driving your issues and symptoms

And while HRT can absolutely be a helpful piece of the puzzle…
it doesn’t address these underlying drivers.

When we support those deeper layers, everything starts to feel easier.

This work is for you if:

  • You feel like you’ve tried everything but still don’t feel like yourself
  • You know something isn’t right, but don’t have clear answers
  • You’re tired of guessing and want a personalised approach
  • You want to understand your body, not just manage symptoms
