IT’S A NATURAL PHASE! What the media, supplement companies and some so-called ‘experts’ will have you believe though is that perimenopause IS a set symptoms, a pathology, or a condition. Nope. Symptoms CAN (and usually do) manifest at 35, 36, 37, OR not until 45, 46, 47. Or NOT AT ALL. It will be DIFFERENT for EVERY woman.

Perimenopause isn’t just an imbalance between oestrogen and progesterone. It’s a phase in a woman’s life when many other hormones and systems are disrupted, resulting in various metabolic shifts that affect us physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s a whole body systems shift and we need to take a whole body systems approach.
A question I get asked often is how is perimenopause different from menopause? One leads into the other but there are different things going on in each phase hormonally and experientially.
They are your body’s way of letting you know something is awry with your digestion and gut health – and they mustn’t be ignored. Pesky gut symptoms aside, the health of your gut and your ability to digest your food is CRUCIAL for your overall health and wellbeing including immunity, hormone balance, metabolism, brain health and disease prevention.
In perimenopause, your cycles are still regular (at least at first) and you are still fertile – albeit not as fertile as in your 20s and 30s – however, the communication between your brain and ovaries is starting to change (somewhat break down), resulting in changes to your cycles and periods such as longer or shorter cycles, irregular cycles, shorter or longer periods and heavier and/or painful periods.
Insulin resistance is an important concept to understand always, but even more so in your 40s as your body becomes more prone to it. Insulin resistance equals less energy, more inflammation and a tendency to gain fat especially around the middle.
